The definition of an advocate is a “supporter, believer, sponsor, promoter, campaigner, backer, or spokesperson.” An effective patient advocate is someone you trust to act in your best interest and can work well with everyone on your healthcare team such as your doctors and nurses.
Members of your family, such as a spouse, a child, or other relative can act as your patient advocate. Another option is a close friend. There are also professional advocates. Hospitals sometimes have professionals who can help called Patient Representatives or Patient Advocates. Social workers, nurses and chaplains may also be patient advocates.
The important thing is that your patient advocate can help you to get the care you deserve with the least amount of hassle. No one should enter the medical system without a patient advocate who won't be afraid to ask questions and bring up any concerns regarding your treatment.
That is why the Law Firm of Janet, Jenner & Suggs has developed a guide on how to how to be a patient advocate.
